Man United Set To Pip Real Madrid To £17million Wigan Winger?
Word just arriving in The Transfer Tavern that The Mirror say Premier League champions Manchester United are “close to pipping” Real Madrid for Wigan winger Antonio Valencia.
The tabloid claims that the Red Devils “are ready to clinch a £17million deal” for the Ecuadorian International to leave the JJB Stadium for Old Trafford “in the next few days”.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is understood to have “given the thumbs-up to bid” for 23-year-old Valencia and the Premiership giants “are confident” that Los Blancos can be “seen off” because Valencia “wants” to join United.
Chief executive David Gill “is trying to agree a fee” with Wigan and “does not want to get involved in an auction” with the Latics, with United believing that their “offer is fair”
The paper goes on to claim that “player exchanges” had been discussed, but this has changed due to Steve Bruce leaving the JJB and Roberto Martinez taking over at Wigan. The Mirror stating, that the North West side “may now prefer straight cash” for Valencia.
Los Blancos “sent a delegation to Wigan last month”, according to the tabloid, and were “willing to pay around £18million” for Valencia. However, Valencia was “second choice” for Real “behind United’s Cristiano Ronaldo” and “is more interested” in staying in England.
Valencia is currently on World Cup duty with Ecuador, with The Mirror saying that the winger “hopes to have a medical at United” as soon as possible on his return.
Was it water, whisky or wine that fuelled this tale from The Mirror? Have United really edged out Los Blancos for the Wigan winger? Should this rumour Fly or Die?
