Top 5 Liverpool games of the past 10 years
1) Liverpool 3 -3 Milan – Champions League Final 2005
The “Miracle of Istanbul” was very surreal for me. I don’t think I have been more down than at half-time during Champions League final. The team, it seemed had been humiliated by a much better team. Benitez, and the Liverpool players seemed though to have other ideas, and they came out after half-time like men possessed. The change to put in a defensive midfielder, Didi Hamann, did help matters, but it was a belief in the players that they were destined to win the trophy which got them back into a game; a game which seemed a lost cause. Gerrard didn’t stop believeing after making it 3-1 with a header, everyone one started believing when Smicer made it 3-2, and everyone was in dreamland when Alonso converted the rebound to his saved penalty after a “mad six minutes”. The miracle save from Dudek in extra-time to the penalty shoot-out win, it was all so surreal but an incredibly happy moment for all Liverpool fans
2) Liverpool 4 – 0 Real Madrid – Champions League Last 16 2009
This was a very special moment, in a game where Liverpool never looked like losing. From the off Liverpool hounded Real Madrid off the ball, and made the Spanish giants look very ordinary indeed. I’ve rated this game so highly as it is probably the most comfortable time I have watched Liverpool in a big game. They had so much control, and so much passion on a big European night, it never looked like they would lose. They got a bit of luck with the first two goals but they deservedly won 4-0 in my opinion.
3) Liverpool 4 – 1 Manchester United – Premier League 2009
In a game that Liverpool needed to win to keep pace in the Premier League, they emphatically answered their critics. After going 1-0 down, Liverpool had the majority of the game, and Torres worried Vidic with his pace all day, a day that ended in the Manchester United defender being sent off. From the subsequent free-kick, Fabio Aurelio scored a wonderful goal and set up a fantastic 4-1 victory away from home at Old Trafford. It was great to see all those solemn faces at the Stretford End once again. Sorry about the french youtube video for this one:
4) Liverpool 5 – 4 Alaves – UEFA Cup Final 2001
A game that had more drama than any other European final I can remember. It was a yo-yo match which should have really been put out of sight by the Reds. Going 2-0 and 3-1 up, it should have been enough, but the Spanish minnows came back twice to force extra-time. It was probably even more stressful to watch than the Champions League final as goals just kept flying in. Just as you thought that Liverpool had sealed the victory through a fantastic Robbie Fowler goal, Alaves came back again. The Golden own-goal in extra-time finished a spectacular game, you probably won’t see another final like that for a long time, oh wait, what about that Champions League final a few years later?
5) Liverpool 1 – 0 Chelsea – Champions League Semi-Final 2005
Another game in Liverpool’s march towards destiny in 2005, the game will of course be remembered by the supposed “ghost goal” of Luis Garcia. The fact is though Baros had been fouled by Cech and the goalkeeper would most likely have been sent off if the goal wasn’t given. Chelsea would have probably lost the game more heavily if the referee didn’t allow the goal. It wasn’t a classic match by any means but in the context of Liverpool’s progress towards the final, it was a very memorable game and will be written into Anfield folklore.
