Will Everton splash out £7m on Lewis Holtby?
The Sun are reporting that Everton will pull together £7 million to spend on Schalke winger Lewis Holtby. Holtby, born to an English father and a German mother, has impressed in the Bundesliga for the last couple of years – excelling at Aachen as an 18-year-old last season before his move to Schalke, where he has looked promising when he has appeared and he is still just 19 years old.
Holtby considers himself German rather than English having grown up there and only recently joined Schalke, but their financial problems have meant it’s possible that any of their players could move on in the January window and Holtby, as a young talent, is bound to attract a lot of attention. A question here is whether Everton could pull together this relatively large transfer fee for a youngster when David Moyes may feel it would be better spent on more experienced players rather than raw talent.
Everton will be helped in the potential move by the fact that Holtby, regardless of his German allegiance, is an Everton fan. His father hails from Liverpool and is a diehard Everton fan and he’s brought the young winger up to support Everton too. Holtby is quoted as saying
“My father was born in England and was an Everton fan since the age of five. He immediately infected me with the Everton virus! Since then I have always been [an] Everton fan and have always followed their games.”
Whilst his allegiance to the Blues, alongside Schalke’s financial woes, may make a transfer possible, it is yet to be seen whether Moyes will be willing to spend such an amount on a talent like he did with Marouane Fellaini, or whether he will be more careful with any money the board give him.
