3 ESSENTIAL Summer Signings For Harry Redknapp

Spurs had a relatively low-key January transfer window. It was busy, with Saha and Nelson coming in, whilst a host of fringe players left on loan. But there were no big name signings, no players who would instantly demand a role in the first team.

Well, now as their season wobbles Harry may be regretting this uncharacteristically cautious approach. If Spurs hope to once again push into the upper echelons of the league next year, and compete in the then some new blood is needed.

 A top top striker…

With Pav gone, and Adebayor’s loan up soon, Spurs will definitely need a main hitman to lead the line. Defoe and Saha have played well when needed this year, but it’s clear to all that a big name player is needed. This chase has been dragging on since the dawn of time and Spurs have been linked with the likes of (deep breath) Loic Remy, Leandro Diamao, Demba Cisse, Demba Ba, Falcao, Amauri, Hugo Rodellaga, Juinor Hoilett, Teddy Sheringham, and Elvis.

There’s a lot to choose from but this summer seems likely to be one of transition for Spurs. With Harry probably (maybe nowadays this should read possibly) joining , and the futures of Bale, Modric and VDV far from certain, wouldn’t it be nice to maintain some stability with the first team. To this end perhaps the best solution would be to resign Adebayor.

Ade has enjoyed a good first season with the club, and seems to be enjoying his football. There are stumbling blocks, namely his wage demands. But how much less would Spurs have to pay any other of those top stars?

There is of course one other option. A man so hated, so controversial I have to whisper his name … Tevez. Some may worry about his impact in the dressing room, but is his attitude any worse than Balotelli, Terry, or a host of other prima-donnas?

Not really. Plus when he is playing his is a proven Prem goalscorer, and more than that. He was a proven leader for City before his troubles. Despite favouring Spain or Italy, the longer his move drags on the more likely he would be to accept a move the North London.

Adebayor or Tevez; Two big names, demanding big wages, and bringing big egos, but both would still provide the goals Spurs need next year.

 A top top defender

With Bassong out on loan, and no scientific breakthrough on the horizon to help Ledley’s knee, it’s clear Spurs could do with a good, solid centre-back. And the good news is there’s one happy to join.

was quoted a few days ago telling of his admiration for Spurs and for the English game in general. Spurs would have a fight on their hands, with the likes of and Newcastle also interested. But if the can stump up the £12 million needed then they can steal a march on this signing.

Ajax have a good history of producing defenders and Vertonghen will hope to follow in the footsteps of fellow Dutchman Vermaelen’s move to the EPL. There are other options out there such as Walter Samuel, and Samba. But at just 24 Vertonghen could be a stable part of the back line for years to come.

Obvious really. Spurs actually have a good shot at landing the most sort after player in world football right now. Harry has admitted Spurs interest saying,

“Hazard was a player we’d spoken about a few weeks ago. We were talking about the possibility of getting him. He’s definitely on our list.”

This came as no great shock as everyone and their nan is after Hazard, but Spurs have consistently been mentioned (along with the red half of North London) as front runners for the player. His smooth style would also fit excellently with Spurs flowing, attacking football under Harry.

At £30 million he wouldn’t come cheap, and some say Spurs already have similar players. But you can never have too much of a good thing, and there is always room for a player of his quality. It would also a major coup to beat out Arsenal, Barca, and everyone else if could land his signature.

nice article, though fairly obvious: we need a good striker and good defender to do well… Eden Hazard would be great though, and if need be, Spurs really should break the bank to get him, put him on the right instead of Lennon and play the same formation, or in the middle to give VDV a break, and there ya go, top 4 easy.

oh, and Vermaelen and Vertonghen are Belgian, not Dutch… :)

I’d like to see Damaio, Hazard & Vertonghen added to our current squad including Adebayor.

Spurs’ season is wobbling? Really? 1 loss to Woolwich. We’ve taken as many points from them as they have us. Goal difference is down 3 goals, show what. 16 wins and 5 draws from 26. 3 of the loses to the top 2. C’mon where do this chump writers come from. Unbelievable. And anyone who thinks Spurs are gonna but Hazard are in cloud cookoo land.

Everyone talks about Eden Hazard, but explain what the plan is with him… When you are 3rd, you don’t just buy someone and hope they fit in – there needs to be a plan… Is his signing in anticipation of Modders and/or Bale leaving? Do you REALLY think that we would spend 30m on ONE player? No we should not. Lastly – I HATE this “top striker” thing. We need TWO strikers. I would rather buy 2 x £10m strikers than 1 x £20m striker. Ade is off. Defoe is getting on a bit, and not a team player, and Saha is short-term. Look at Villa – they pay 24m (on a non-top striker) for Bent, and now he is out for the season – after having mostly disappointed. 24m! We spent nothing on Saha and got as much out of him in 3 games. It is not the hype and not the price tag – it is how the guy will complement your style of football as well as score goals.
