Why Luka Modric Will Stay At Spurs [Whether He Wants To Or Not]
As Luka Modric is linked with yet another move away from White Hart Lane (The Mirror), this time to Manchester United, this article looks at why he’d be better off staying at White Hart Lane.
The Croatian was the subject of last summer’s biggest transfer saga, with many believing he would be a Chelsea player before the end of the August. Daniel Levy and Harry Redknapp’s firm refusal against Chelsea’s persistence has paid dividends for both club and player.
Many Spurs fans probably feared the worst when Modric was left out of their game with Manchester United, with Redknapp stating the midfielders “head not being in the right place” (Guardian).
Looking at the current state of affairs at Chelsea, Modric will be delighted he stayed at White Hart Lane, even if he initially wanted to leave. Tottenham are all but guaranteed to be playing Champions League football next season, while Chelsea face a real battle for fourth place.
Questions about Modric’s future arose again last month, with Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly being interested in bringing him to Old Trafford (Goal.com).
Although this didn’t happen in the January transfer window, the rumour mill continues to churn out stories linking him with a summer move to the English champions.
First of all, if Sir Alex did decide he was going to go all out to sign Modric, it’s extremely unlikely Spurs would be willing to play ball. A bid of at least £50 million would be needed to get Levy’s attention. Tottenham rejected a £40 million bid for Modric last summer, and I see no reason why Levy would be willing to alter his stance this year.
Manchester United are in desperate need of a creative midfielder, and whilst Modric is one of the best around, I just can’t see United paying mega-money for him.
Christian Eriksen, Viktor Fischer, Mario Götze and Nicolas Gaitan are all cheaper options, with the potential to match or even exceed Modric’s ability.
If all these obstacles are somehow overcome, and Luka Modric assessed his situation, here’s what it is. Tottenham are only five points behind United and seven behind City, and although it seems unlikely, no-one should write them off for the title just yet.
With that in mind, what possible reason could he have for leaving a title-challenging side that are playing Champions League football next season?

You may well be right as most players are out and out mercenaries. But all over Europe people are talking about the way that Tottenham play and like last seasons CL man players now wish to come here who had not even looked up their history books and hence knew nothing about us.
I think that you will find that tehre is an emerging group of players who DO care about “how” and who do NOT wish to be seen as prostitutes who sell to the highest bidder.
However, whetehr Modric is one of them i cannot say but money does npot ALWAYS mean everything

Modric made it plain he wants to leave. January transfer window basically irrelevant these days so look for Fergie to up the ante in the summer. I don’t want him to go but I think he will and I think it will be Utd.

Not so sure about that, I’m pretty sure Levy is still ticked off with red nose over the way he acted in the Berbatoss deal. I doubt he would want to do business with him again.
