The Death of a Star

Brian CloughIt was Neil Young who once sang “It’s better to burn out than to fade away”. I don’t imagine for a minute that Brian Clough listened to old Shaky on a regular basis but he most certainly shared those sentiments. For that is the way that the former Nottingham Forest manager would have wanted to end his illustrious career and not in the sorry way that I and 30,000 others …

7 Days Of Stoke Speculation

Carlton Cole: Is under Pullis's radar

Stoke will definitely be in the market for at least one striker this summer as both James Beattie and Dave Kitson are expected to leave following their public fall-outs with boss Tony Pullis.

The Potters are believed to be monitoring West Ham’s Carlton Cole as a potential replacement but are a long way short of being able to meet the Hammers asking price of £15m.

That’s unless they …

There Are Good Managers and Great Managers …Young Man

Brian Clough: The greatest manager England never had

Truly great managers break every rule perceived as ‘conventional wisdom’. It’s what makes them stand out from the crowd whilst propelling them towards extraordinary achievement.

Like all historic legends in football management, Cloughie’s achievements continue to reverberate around   the clubs he took from relative obscurity right up to the pinnacle of English and European football.

Although the likes of Bob Paisley, Bill Shankly, Matt Busby and …

Once Upon a Time in the Midlands

Can Billy Davies emulate Clough's success at Forest?

The East Midlands may possess a rich and colourful heritage in the beautiful game but, as a geographical entity, it has had very little to shout about during the 21st century.

Although synonymous with the identities of great managers and towering pillars in the English game such as Brian Clough and Martin O’Neill, the fortunes of clubs in this part of the world have proved …

THAT Stevie G Rumour

I was inundated with emails and texts on the vicious Stevie G rumour that was doing the rounds on the Internet. Incidentally, well done to all to all those who resisted the urge to pass the tale off as their own inside info.

The story was a nasty concoction of an affair that resulted in pregnancy, a Derby County player and a penguin called Loretta. Okay, I made that last bit up.

There have been rumours put out about Gerrard before of course. None of which have stood up to any scrutiny. I can only wonder if they all came out prior to big games?

Alex Curran told OK! Magazine..

“There have been loads of rumours going around Liverpool saying that me and Steven have split up, that he’s moved to a hotel and ridiculous things like that,” she announced.

“I’d like to set the record straight. We have never been happier. I wouldn’t mind the rumours but we don’t even argue.”

“He (Steven Gerrard) always plans dinner and if I’ve been out sometimes with the girls and I’m a little hungover he’ll get up with the children for me. He’s really thoughtful like that.”

Know Your Enemy – Stuart Attwell

Can we adopt the little blighter?

When Stuart Attwell hangs up his whistle in years to come, the complexion of his autobiography will no doubt be very different to Graham Poll’s ‘Seeing Red’. Attwell’s book will be of the horror genre, and a working title could be, ‘The Tale of Vicarage Road: The Phantom Goal’. Attwell could of course have prequels and sequels, and could call on a whole host of terrible …

Managers Who Could Manage

People who have seen Brian Clough on TV and the way he spoke in some of those legendary interviews he gave could be tempted to think that here is a man who was all talk and far too outspoken. However, it is amazing to see how many of the people in the football world that were close to him have stressed the fact that he was a warm and generous person.

Clough may have …

You’re So Vain I Bet You Think This Article’s About You

You’re so vain, I bet you think this article’s about you don’t you, don’t you?

Let’s face it, whilst Adam Pearson’s decision to sack Phil Brown raised a few eyebrows, no one was really too upset about it outside of Hull City. Brown was, let’s say, an acquired taste, sort of like a marmite-anchovy sandwich. However, in a sense, Brown’s a real loss. Whilst no one likes a manager who believes in …

Spurs Double Legends Mr Dave Mackay

David Craig Mackay, otherwise known as Dave Mackay, was left-half back in the Tottenham Hotspur team that won the Double in 1960/61. Mackay was born on 14th November 1934, and began his career playing for the club he supported growing up, Heart …

Leeds United and Derby County are said to be hot on the trail of recently released Leicester forward Paul Dickov according to the Daily Mirror.

Veteran striker Dickov is seen as the final piece in Leeds United manager Simon Grayson’s promotion puzzle, whilst Derby are known to be keen on the 37 year old Scot after a successful loan spell at the club earlier this season.
