News in the Football Transfer Tavern is hotting up as Mirror Football report that Liverpool are stepping up their pursuit of Derby County’s young starlet Will Hughes with a view to a possible January transfer.

The England Under-21 international has already been likened to Reds legend Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers has reportedly lined him up as a direct future replacement for the Anfield skipper.

Liverpool chief scout Dave Fallows went to watch Hughes in Derby County’s most recent Championship fixture.

However, the former Swansea City manager could face a battle with Roberto Martinez as the new Everton boss eyes  up the 18-year-old as well.

The Toffees also had scouts watching the starlet in the Rams’ recent match and they would have been impressed with his performance against Bolton Wanderers as he contributed an assist before limping off into the second half.

The Championship side are not prepared to let Hughes leave on the cheap but an offer around £6 million could be enough to land one of the most promising talents in English football.

Derby manager Nigel Clough said last month: “Would it be more than £6 million? Yes, I think it is fair to say that.”

“We just think it is going to be a very, very substantial figure to tempt him away.”

Do you think Hughes will end up at Anfield in January? How much should the Reds pay for the wonderkid? Let us know your thoughts below.

This feature s absolute bullshit. According to this media source lfc were going to buy Hughes two months ago. They got that wrong and they continue to get it wrong. It’s just another fabricated back page story with no substance

Sam rush seeded the market already, it’s 10m and a season loan back to start the bidding for will. The lad will be better off staying and playing though. 2 more seasons, one in the premier and he will be better and worth more. Hands off for now!

If Liverpool are really interested in this lad then this is the right time to seal the deal.
