The Football Transfer Tavern has been quiet of late but this little bit of gossip has made our punters sit up and take note. David Villa – subject of major transfer speculation of late is now set to pen a contract extension at Barcelona.
Sport report that the Catalan giants are wary of the Villa situation developing into a Fernando Llorente-type issue and are determined not to let the player escape on a free when his contract runs down. Villa has been a bit-part player for most of the season and has also been involved in dressing room conflict with Lionel Messi leading to speculation that the striker’s time at the Camp Nou is coming to an end.
The Spanish international has been victim to several long-term injuries of late and has seen himself go from an integral player for the club to one that is behind Alexis Sanchez in the striking pecking order. The lure of regular first team football could well be a major selling point for the former Valencia man should clubs come calling.
Villa is looking to secure a place in the Spanish national side before the 2014 World Cup and the Asturian man will be more than a little alarmed at the match time he is getting at present. Tito Vilanova recently commented that: “We are allowed to play with 11, just like everyone else, and not everyone can start,” meaning that a contract extension for the 31-year-old may not be as simple as Barcelona hope it will be.
