The Mail reports that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to Vasco da Gama’s strong central defender Dede as he looks to bolster his Old Trafford backline.

With injury concerns remaining over Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Ferguson has identified Dede as a possible recruit to his Man United side and has instructed Jaap Stam to run the rule over the promising defender.

Dede, 23, hails from the same area of Rio de Janeiro as current Man United stars Rafael and Fabio and has been tipped to be one of the cornerstones of the Brazil national side when the country host the 2014 World Cup. The central defender is rated as the second hottest prospect in Brazil only behind wonder kid Neymar and could command a transfer fee of around £15million when he eventually moves to Europe.

United are not the only team interested in the defender with Portuguese giants Benfica said to be rivalling United in their interest in Dede. Benifica have made a habit of snatching and then nurturing the most promising South American talent in recent seasons and Dede seems to fit in perfectly with this policy. A perfect example of this is Nicolas Gaitan who was purchased from Boca Juniors and is now, ironically and Manchester United target.

Dede’s current club Vasco da Gama are in a perilous financial position making it more likely that they will have to sell if an offer of around £15million comes in. Their financial plight is so bad that one of their players has even taken the club to a small claims court over lost payments and there have been threats of a players strike after non payment of wages.

The scouting report on Dede says that he is a strong tough tackling central defender with strong aerial ability. These attributes are perfect for the Premier League and United defiantly need the defensive cover due to the persistent injury problems of Vidic and Ferdinand. Dede certainly seems like a promising proposition for United and their fans and his arrival would be a welcome addition to the United squad.
