3 Reasons Why™ Vertonghen Should Choose Spurs Over Arsenal

According to reports in The Metro Spurs have stolen a lead over their bitter north London rivals Arsenal in the race for Ajax’s Belgian centre back Jan Vertonghen.

It seems the 25-year-old will be faced with the choice between the London rivals, with the outside chance Newcastle may steal him at the final seconds.

Here are 3 reasons why the centre back should choose Spurs (providing they finish in the top 4 which looks increasingly likely) over their rivals Arsenal:

First Team Opportunities

Now it could be argued that Vertonghen would have a good chance of first team opportunities at both clubs, however, I feel opportunities would come more readily and easily at Spurs. With the constant fitness concerns over Ledley King, the inconsistent form and fitness of Dawson and the ageing William Gallas, Vertonghen would slip straight into that Spurs back four. At Arsenal they have Vermaelen and Koscielny who have been a great partnership for them in the second half of the season.

Harry Redknapp

Now I am not for one second saying Redknapp is a better manager than Wenger so calm down Arsenal fans. What I am saying is Redknapp has a great knack of getting the best out of new players and foreign imports. Wenger is arguably the world’s best with youngsters and has the track record to prove it but, Redknapp is great at intergrating older foreign imports into the Premier League.

Less Pressure

Now despite Spurs fans getting use to challenging the top 4 at least no one can deny the pressures at Arsenal are greater. For a new player who requires time to settle into a new league and style of play, this pressure isn’t helpful. At Spurs he will still gain the admiration for good performances but any mistakes will not be as high profile as at Arsenal where people still expect them to be challenging for the title every season.

Spurs and their fans want success but outside their club few people are expecting them to become title contenders year after year.

I don’t think anybody but the most deluded Arsenal fan is expecting either team to be winning the title anytime soon. A nonsense claim.

I feel whoever finishes 3rd in the Premier League this season will be the team that Vertonghen signs for. As a Tottenham fan, I am hoping it will be us!
