So after two years at Anfield and a total of seven goals and six assists, Stewart Downing has left the building.
Downing has become the latest high profile casualty of Kenny Dalglish’s second ill-fated spell at the club, departing the Reds for a loss of £14 million.
Not quite as bad as Andy Carroll – but not great to say the least.
Only Jordan Henderson, Jose Enrique, Sebasitan Coates and Luis Suarez (just) remain at the club of the men who Dalglish and former director of football Damien Comolli spent such so much on to bring them to the club.
£20 million was spent on Downing, with the idea being that the former Aston Villa man would provide the width and the crosses for Andy Carroll to thrive on. Now he will get the same opportunity to do just that, only at Upton Park and for a fraction of the pairs’ original price.
Rodgers has spent little time in shaping the Liverpool team the way he wants.
Charlie Adam, Andy Carroll, Jay Spearing, Jonjo Shelvey, and now Downing – all regular starters under Dalglish – have been shown the exit door for a combined total of £33.5 million over the past two summers.
With more players expected to arrive at Anfield in the coming weeks, will there be further exits under Rodgers ruthless regime?
