Manchester United go into the new season in something of a strange position.
Bookies have them at third favourites for the title behind both Chelsea and Manchester City. It begs the question as to when was the last time a Premier League winning team came into the new season third in the odds to retain their title?
The odds can be attributed to one thing alone – the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
The arrival of David Moyes – a manager with no title winning or Champions League experience – whilst being backed by United supporters, has them slightly concerned.
This fact has not been helped by the fact Moyes is yet to add any reinforcements to his side, whilst Manchester City have splashed out over £90 million on new attacking talent.
Moyes will have spent the seven weeks since taking over at the club assessing his squad and deciding which players he is likely to start with for the season opener against Swansea City this coming Saturday.
Whilst he has found it difficult to make the step up with regards to transfers, United fans will hope he finds it easier to prove as ruthless as his predecessor with regards to disposing of the deadwood.
United have a few players in line for make or break seasons at Old Trafford, and here we have identified five who may well find themselves in the last chance saloon.
