Abramovich Has To Bite The Bullet & Not Simply Blame Di Matteo

It’s been a tough few seasons for Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, burdened with a £50million price tag when he swapped Merseyside for West London in January 2011 El Nino has only managed 19 goals in 85 games for the blues.

Now out of the shadow of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, Torres has still struggled to rediscover the form he showed at Liverpool and now owner Roman Abramovich is casting his eyes over a replacement for Torres rather than an addition to Chelseas striking force.

Atletico Madrid stiker Radamel Falcao is being lined up as the man that can fire Chelsea back to the top of English football and maintain their position as the Kings of Europe (link).

It appears that Abramovich is ready to give up on Fernando Torres’ career at Chelsea after his indifferent start to the season and Falcao is looking like the ideal candidate considering his recent form and comments.

The Colombian striker has scored 13 goals in 10 games this season and netted a superb hatrick against Chelsea in the European Super Cup in August.

Falcao is perhaps the hottest striker in the world at the moment and his recent comments about Chelsea and English football have kick-started the rumours that his time in Spain is coming to an end.

Chelsea are expected to wade in with a £48million bid in either the summer or January to buy the 26 year old out of his contract, which leaves Fernando Torres just a few months to change Di Matteo and Abramovich’s thoughts.

The Spanish striker could be available for less than half the fee that took him to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool, but there is still the question over Torres’ ability and whether he is good enough to be one of Europe’s top strikers again.

Torres is definitely capable of scoring goals but it’s his reliability in front of goal that has worried Abramovich and this is bound to be on the minds of the strikers potential suitors as to whether to gamble on the Spaniards services.

Atletico Madrid seems the most obvious destination for Torres as the Spaniard started his career at the club and he would probably be the most crowd pleasing choice when Falcao inevitably flees.

This Falcao and Torres affair is all boiling down to who is the better striker and which club is getting the better deal. It’ll be a difficult decision for Abramovich to make after putting £50million worth of faith in Torres but the simple fact is that he has not delivered and Chelsea need to look elsewhere if they want to be the best.

It’s a swap deal that needs to be made sooner rather than later and it could really work out for all parties involved, Falcao will be at a better club, Torres will be happy to return to Atletico and both clubs will be fairly pleased with the striking talent at their club.

This deal is a no brainer for Chelsea and it seems Fernando Torres may not ever get the chance to justify his £50million price tag, so Abramovich will be hoping that Falcao will be able to live up to his value.
