Arsenal contemplating shock defender move

To say eyebrows have been raised here in the Football Transfer Tavern at the Daily Mail’s latest claim surrounding Manchester City defender Micah Richards is digested, this would prove a massive understatement.

The publication claim that England international – well sometimes – Micah Richards is being considered by Arsene Wenger and Arsenal who are looking to reinforce their shaky back line. Richards of course has fallen somewhat out of favour at the Etihad Stadium and has had to contend with not only injuries this term but the superb form of Argentine compatriot Pablo Zabaleta.

Roberto Mancini does not have the faith in the player he once possessed and would be willing to consider offers. Richards is on the same line of thought and wants to be playing first team football week in, week out and would consider a move to a club of Arsenal’s stature. A top four finish would be mandatory but given City’s performances in the Champions League, even if Arsenal miss out and Richards makes a move he probably won’t miss out on too much. As one of our punters quips, its hardly like City have never looked at an Arsenal player before so this makes a welcome change.

Given that Richards is only 24, a move now would give him the chance at another club and whilst it may seem like he has been around forever, the full back is still relatively young and knows he has plenty of life left in him yet and Wenger is hoping he can take some of this energy and replace the underwhelming Bacary Sagna (this term!) with a fresher addition.
