Theo Walcott’s future has been a constant topic of debate here in the Football Transfer Tavern, but Jamie Sanderson of Metro believes the Arsenal forward is close to penning a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.
Walcott has verbally agreed a five-year deal worth £90,000-a-week with the Gunners, and further talks to discuss image rights and bonuses are scheduled to take place before the weekend.
The news will come as welcome relief for Arsenal fans, who have been concerned over the clubs apparent refusal to budge on their tight wage structure.
The 23-year-old’s performances in recent weeks have forced Wenger’s hand, and a significant increase on his £60,000-a-week deal has been made.
Wenger stated last week he has been ‘encouraged’ by how the talks have progressed, although the two parties are understood to have not spoken since.
Walcott’s current deal expires in the summer, whilst the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United have both been linked with a possible January move.
