Metro have a rather sensational claim for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern after they note that Arsene Wenger has designs on signing Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema.
In keeping with his policy of utter failure throughout the transfer window, Wenger has now decided that Jose Mourinho’s infamous quote of “if you can’t hunt with a dog (Higuain) you will have to hunt with a cat (Benzema),” and pay nearly double to do it.
Given Arsenal are willing to pay £40 million for Benzema, it is no shock that a fair few faces here in the tavern are displaying signs of dismay.
After focusing all summer on trying to land Luis Suarez, and failing to do so, contrary to his denials, it is pretty clear that Wenger has now hit the panic button and is willing to bring in just about anyone who will placate fans.
Just days after being linked with a move for Real Madrid skipper Iker Casillas, it seems that Wenger now feels that the club would sell not only their talisman keeper but also their only senior out and out striker to boot.
As one of our punters quips, perhaps Wenger has now switched his transfer policy from one player only to one club only.
Either way, this looks like being another losing bet for Arsenal fans, who despite seeing their team all but through to the Champions League group stages after an easy 3-0 first leg win at Fenerbahce, now have more injuries than ever before and simply have to bring in players.
