The Daily Mail carry the story many Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern had forgot following the pandimonium of signing Mesut Ozil late last night.
The Gunners also recruited Italian international goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on loan from Serie B outfit Palermo on deadline day.
Arsene Wenger has been looking for a new keeper this summer and has been linked with a number of top players, including Iker Casillas and also Julio Cesar.
Viviano – a long-term target of Wenger – will now provide competition for Wojciech Szczesny who has started the season strongly at the Emirates Stadium.
Now it seems that whilst he has not found someone to replace his current number one, he now seems to be willing to keep faith in the Polish international, opting for reliable cover instead.
Of course there is always the option of allowing Vivaino to stake claim to the number one position and give him a chance to oust Szczesny.
Wenger spoke after netting the Italian stopper and claimed: “Viviano is a player that we have rated for some time and we are very pleased to have signed him on loan.
“He’s experienced and has proved himself at a high level, and provides us with excellent cover to our existing goalkeepers.”
The 27-year-old has been capped six times for Italy and has experience playing at the highest level in Serie A.
As one of our punters quips, given the sheer amount of games the Gunners will play this season, having two top notch keepers is nothing but a good thing.
