Daily Mirror correspondent John Cross has stopped by at the Football Transfer Tavern this afternoon and punters quickly gather around the journo who has big news concerning Arsenal and Arsene Wenger’s transfer priorities for the summer.
Cross tells the interested crowds that the Gunners are placing Fiorentina’s highly rated Montenegro striker Stevan Jovetic at the very top of their wish list – even higher than David Villa – as the club look to mount a better title challenge and instil more strength in depth up front to supplement the likes of Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott.
The North London side tried, and failed to sign David Villa during the recent January transfer window after Barcelona signalled their intent not to sell this season and the Gunners were left with only one import in the opening month of the year – Malaga’s Nacho Monreal.
Jovetic has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time now and has struck 31 goals in 103 appearances for the Viola since joining from Partizan Belgrade in 2008.
It is anticipated that Jovetic will be just one cog in a summer Arsenal makeover with Cross also detailing that the Emirates Stadium-based side still hold an interest in Liverpool’s Pepe Reina, Toulouse’s holding midfielder Etienne Capoue and Marseille’s Nicolas N’Koulou as Wenger looks for reinforcements all over the park.
Arsenal will look to move both Andrey Arshavin and Sebastian Squillaci on in order to shift their wages off of the bill and raise some funds ahead of any prospective signing.
