I was hoping for an easy shift at the Football Transfer Tavern but a large group of Arsenal fans have just walked in and have cornered the Daily Mirror’s John Cross, who was enjoying a quiet pint in the beer garden.
The Gunners want signings and they are hoping (well, demanding) that John gives them the latest news on potential signings at the Emirates Stadium.
John composes himself, opens his packet of pork scratchings and then delivers some astonishing news; Arsenal are readying a £40 million move for Schalke’s Julian Draxler.
The Gooners erupt into a chorus of cheers (and I’m pretty certain one starts crying tears of joy) but after a few moments of jubilation, one of them stops and says “Who?”
Luckily John can give them the ‘down-low’ on Draxler and tells them everything they need to know about the 19-year-old German wonderkid.
I was just about to leave the guys and go clear up a few tables, when John announces that Arsenal’s boardroom is actually pushing this potential Draxler deal ahead and not Wenger himself. This is huge news!
Apparently, the Emirates hierarchy are worried that Arsene won’t spend any of their £70 million transfer kitty, and despite Wenger’s reservations over Draxler’s valuation, they are keen to appease fans with a high profile and expensive signing.
It is going to be a frantic few days in the red half of North London.
