Here in the Football Transfer Tavern we can hear a collective sigh from Arsenal fans who have just learnt via the Daily Mail that transfer target David Villa will not be going anywhere this month.
The deadline for the window is drawing ever closer and Arsene Wenger has been looking to net his desired targets, yet with Barcelona standing firm on the sale of Villa, the Frenchman may have to look elsewhere. Villa of course is not short of striking pedigree, yet has been somewhat of a peripheral figure at the Camp Nou this season and is keen to leave.
Cue Barcelona flat out refusing and keeping the player at the club – so much so that our punters remind us that #freedavidvilla was even trending on Twitter recently. Wenger explained: “Barcelona do not want to sell David Villa, they have made that very, very clear.” He also claimed there was no room for negotiation and added “What is important is that you bring in people to strengthen your squad or you are strong enough to do nothing. Bringing in anyone is to me what the modern game has become.”
Villa has just welcomed his third child into the world and may now come around to the idea that a stay in Barcelona at least until the summer is preferable whilst his family settle, and leave a move to the Premier League open for the summer.
