One of the best keepers in the world is ready to put pen to paper and ink a new contract with his long-term club and disappoint a host of clubs who were ready to pounce at the end of his current contract. At the Football Transfer Tavern we feel that Gianluigi Buffon is one of the best keepers around, yet it seems we will not be seeing him in the Premier League.
Both Sky Sports and Juventus.com report that a short-term contract is close to being finalised with the player himself stating that “I want it to be a short-term deal because I don’t need reassurance; on the contrary, I think it’s better to have motivation. In any case we’re down to the final details.”
The Italian national keeper has repeatedly been linked to a move to a host of Europe’s top clubs, none more so than Arsenal, yet chose to stick by the club even during their period of relegation and exile. Last season Buffon went on to win the Serie A title and cause shots to be downed here in the tavern after Juventus effectively knocked Chelsea out of the Champions League this term (on the upside as our landlord points out at least it will be busy on a Thursday night now!)
Juventus topped their group in the Champions League and could face stellar opposition including Real Madrid and Arsenal in the knockout stages.
