It is not dubbed ‘silly season’ by the fans and media alike for nothing, and here at the Football Transfer Tavern we are not exactly shocked to hear via Sky Sports that Aston Villa are bemused by being linked to an Inter Milan player this January transfer window.
After several publications claimed the Midlands club were after Inter Milan player Philippe Coutinho, people raised an eyebrow or two but due to the quotes attributed to the agent of the player – Cacau Barbosa, the reports were taken at face value. Cue a very confused Paul Lambert when asked about the 20-year-old Brazilian when it was claimed the club has made an approach for him.
Lambert of course refuted the claims about the midfielder and stated that whilst the club are on the lookout for new blood to help avoid the drop, the youngster is not on the wish list. Coutinho himself looks likely to be on the move this month after falling fairly drastically down the pecking order at the San Siro, and his agent is clearly slightly confused about how to do his job.
Despite his tender age, Coutinho is a fully fledged Brazilian international and when he was only 16-years-old, Inter paid 4 million euros for the player. With Aston Villa devoid of any creativity or indeed what seems quality in their side at present, perhaps Lambert should consider a bid for the player after all!
