Brad Friedel Move Denied So What’s With The 4 Goalies?
Is Brad Friedel a bit too long in the tooth now? The answer is probably. The biggest questions is why would Villas-Boas spend around £12mil on a world class keeper like Hugo Lloris. Friedel and Lloris have been battling it out since the start of the season for the number one jersey, with Friedel holding on to it for all but two league games.
However the French captain was between the sticks for the crunch north London derby and again for the Europa League tie against Lazio. And Lloris himself has stated that he wants more games at Spurs, in the Sun Lloris said:”“I need to keep playing to get more confidence and play to my best.”
Friedel is a solid keeper there is not doubting that but he is closing in on his 42nd birthday and with one of the best goalkeepers in the world breathing down his neck it may be time for him to move on. Where to? I hear you ask, well according to the Metro a loan move to Blackburn, with Robinson moving on to West Ham.
A later twist in the tale is Blackburn boss, Henning Berg told the BBC that it was merely speculation. So where does this leave Friedel in the grand scheme of things? He’s certainly never been the type of player who is happy to sit on the bench and accept his weekly wage like Winston Bogarde or Michael Owen but a keeper of Llrois’s quality cannot and will not want to sit on the bench.
AVB and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy don’t want to see the 41 year old leave just yet but as the Mirror said that it is expected Blackburn will make another move for him in January. Which I for one, wouldn’t be surprised to see happen as Spurs have an incredible 4 first team goalies to choose from!
The forgotten men that are Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini, the latter the only one to have featured this season are also apparently on the move with the Championship the likely destination.
To sum all of this up, Friedel is still a rock in goal and for a 41 year old he is incredible, but Hugo Llrois who is 16 years his junior is one of the best keepers in the world and does not deserve to sit on the bench. AVB has to do what’s best by the club and having a someone like Friedel as a number 2 for Llrois is brilliant.
This whole deal comes down to other variables; if Robinson moves to West Ham, if Cudicini and Gomes don’t already move and if Friedel is willing to move. Funny old game …isn’t it? Or is it?
