Here in the Football Transfer Tavern, we have to agree with the Daily Mail, who note that Everton have been the big winners of transfer deadline day – well Arsenal aside that is.
The club may have lost both David Moyes and Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United, but they managed to get a massive £27.5 million for Fellaini – more than his original buy out clause – and also see a couple of really shrewd acquisitions come in to boot.
As we all know, the Toffees are one of the best run football clubs around, and this summer they did not disappoint us.
One of the best deals of the transfer window has to be that of Romelu Lukaku, who the Goodison Park club managed to get in on loan from Chelsea for the season.
Roberto Martinez managed to beat Steve Clarke and West Bromwich Albion in order to do this – no small task considering Lukaku knows the West Midlands club well and netted 17 times during his loan spell at The Hawthorns last term.
Securing the Belgian beast of a forward will do no harm to Martinez’ squad – with Manchester City outcast Gareth Barry also completing a late loan switch to Merseyside.
Lukaku was understandably gutted at the prospect of having to leave Stamford Bridge once again on loan and made no secret of that fact, yet at the latest hour possible, he chose to make the switch to the bluen half of Liverpool after being convinced by Everton manager Martinez.
