Chelsea ace set for extended loan
A frustration voiced by Chelsea fans inside the Football Transfer Tavern this season has been the fact that top players have been allowed to go out on loan, leaving the current squad looking rather threadbare.
Sources at talkSPORT reckon the club are set to further extend a loan spell of one of their young stars, with Atletico Madrid thought to be close to tying up a deal to keep goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at the Vicente Calderon beyond the summer.
According to reports in Madrid daily AS, a one-year extension to the young keepers loan deal has been agreed in principle between the two clubs that allows the Belgian to stay in the Spanish capital until 2014. The new contract is expected to be signed in the coming days.
Previous reports had suggested Chelsea were keen to recall the 20-year-old from his loan spell using him as a genuine contender for Petr Cech’s number one shirt next season, although it is understood they have been swayed by the idea of the Belgian gaining Champions League experience with Atletico next season.
Courtois has really impressed in Spain and on Sunday set a new club record of going 820 minutes without conceding a goal. His form has been so good that Atletico manager Diego Simeone was thought to have made it a priority to keep him beyond the summer. Chelsea have been keeping a close eye on the man they expect to be Petr Cech’s successor, and have been delighted with the form he has shown in La Liga.
