Chelsea pursue Cesar Azpilicuta for a potential replacement for Jose Bosingwa, is this a necessary move? Or is Villa Boas getting carried away with Marseille’s defender..

Once again, Andre Villas-Boas has his eye on yet another player who’s name we can’t pronounce. This time he’s looking at French hopefuls, l’Olympique de Marseille and their Spanish defender Cesar Azpilicuta to be Chelsea’s possible ‘next big thing’.

This season, the Blues’ once mighty Jose Bosingwa has arguably let his right-back position slip, losing 3-1 to Aston Villa earlier this season for example was surely something Boas didn’t plan for. With a 13 man defence in his squad however, Is the answer to his Bosingwa predicament to look overseas for a new signing? Only time will tell.

When approached by L’Equip, Mirror Football tells us that Azpilicuta commented on the potential move by saying, ‘They are just rumours.’ He went on to tell the French magazine. that, ‘.. If the leaders of Chelsea want me, they should first discuss that with l’Olympique de Marseille. If a proposal comes, I will think about it.’

With the interest in the player pure speculation at the moment, and with another two years on Cesar’s French contract, the question now exists of whether or not Chelsea will look to purchasing the player. The debate also arises of how much Chelsea need a strengthened defence to help pursue their goal of winning the Premiership once again. Will Bosingwa take heed of these rumours and up his game, or will Villa Boas have to dip into his team’s hefty wallet?
