Here in the Football Transfer Tavern, Chelsea fans are looking elated at the news from the Metro who note Sami Khedira has asked to leave Real Madrid.
The 26 year old has been unsettled by the additions to an already rich midfield squad at the club and now his ever present place in the starting line up next to Xabi Alonso has been called into question with not only Luka Modric challenging for a spot, but also Casemiro – who has excelled and been the stand out player for Real Madrid during pre season – and highly rated talent Asier Illarramendi.
Khedira is fully aware that he needs to be playing week in week out as the World Cup approaches and is willing to force through a move if necessary. Former manager Jose Mourinho is keen on landing the German international and knows that even in his darkest days at the club, Khedria was a supportive voice in the dressing room and is willing to make an initial bid of £8 million, rising to £15 million in order to push a move through.
Given that Mourinho is still unimpressed by Jon Obi Mikel, and desperate to bring in a new defensive midfielder, Khedira’s unhappiness at the club is a major plus for the ‘Special One’ and despite also being linked to Roma’s Daniele De Rossi, should it come down to a choice, the 26 year old German is Mourinho’s pick of the bunch. Xabi Alonso has also been linked with a move to join Mourinho given the closeness of the pair over the last three seasons and that cannot be ruled out with Alonso also aware that his place in the starting XI under Carlo Ancelotti is not guaranteed.
