Arsenal fans are looking slightly excited here in the Football Transfer Tavern as the Daily Mail link their club to yet another star name this summer after his dad was spotted at the Emirates Stadium yesterday evening.
Juan Mata has been on the fringes of the Chelsea side since Jose Mourinho returned to the club and now it seems that not only have Manchester United been linked with the Spanish international but so too have Arsenal.
The North London club have been linked to a host of top names this summer and have failed to land anyone. As one of our punters quips, it is quite understandable that their fans are refusing to get excited about the arrival of Mata when they are used to such repeated disappointment in the transfer market.
Chelsea and Jose Mourinho are publicly keen to note they want Mata to remain at the club, yet much has been made of the fact that Mata is not a ‘Mourinho type player’ and it seems that the midfielder will certainly have to fight for a place in the starting line up.
Wenger spoke about the rumours surrounding Mata and noted: “I watched the [Chelsea] game last night that Juan Mata could be on the market. I don’t know, there is a reluctance in England to sell to each other.”
“Does that frustrate me? Yes, I like him.
“Everybody knows we are in the market. The whole world knows that now. I cannot be more creative than that, because all has been said and nothing has been concluded.”
Clearly Mata would be welcome at the Emirates Stadium, but quite if Chelsea would be willing to sell their star man of the last couple of seasons to one of their direct rivals, remains to be seen. Should Arsenal make a play for Mata, a derisory bid or a replica of the Luis Suarez bid would not be well received.
