Chelsea fans were left feeling disappointed in the Football Transfer Tavern today after Express revealed that the Blues are set to miss out on FC Porto transfer target James Rodriguez during the January transfer window.
The 21-year-old midfielder is widely regarded as on the brightest prospects in European football and has also been the attracting the attentions of Manchester United in recent times.
However the Premier League rivals have had a setback after Porto chairman Pinto da Costa revealed that he isn’t prepared to let any of his important player leave in January.
He told Portuguese paper A Bola: “When the time comes to contact with me will know that not seeing“I will not let anyone leave. If the FC Porto is a title shot and is in the knockout round of the Champions League, why would I sell a player?”
The Colombian international, who joined Porto for £4 million from Argentine team Club Atletico Banfield in 2010, has a release clause set at £36 million which is likely to put off other potential suitors.
The Blues already have a talented midfield but Rodriguez, who has netted eight goals in 16 games for Porto this season, could still provide an extra aspect to their play with Rafael Benitez looking to build a team capable of challenging the Manchester sides for the Premier League title in January.
