The Real Madrid forward has been victim to injury for much of the first half of the season and even when fit has not hit the heights he managed last season. During the 2011-12 season the trio of Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo netted time after time for the club yet after six months that is no longer the case.
Real sit a much publicised 16 points behind Barcelona and rumours over the future of several players are rife. The Argentine did look set to renew his contract in the summer after pledging his future to Los Blancos but despite being part of Mourinho’s continued rotation policy up top, this did not happen.
Cue rumours over the forwards future with Higuain being linked with Chelsea in recent times, however according to Marca he could well be set to open talks over a new deal. Whilst Barca have managed to secure almost all their players on deals until 2016 or longer, Real have struggled and have Ronaldo, Higuain and Xabi Alonso all stalling.
As our landlord points out, the January transfer window can be unpredictable and Higuain is now set to be linked with many suitors – unless Los Blancos can get their act together and sort a new deal out.
