City forward on three man replacement shortlist
The future of Edin Dzeko is being speculated over once more inside the Football Transfer Tavern, with Hannah Duncan of Metro claiming German giants Borussia Dortmund have added his name to a three-man shortlist of transfer targets.
The Bundesliga side appear to have resigned themselves to losing star striker Robert Lewandowski, whose contract expires at the end of next season. The Polish international is still yet to sign a new deal at Signal Iduna Park and both Bayern Munich and Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move.
Dortmund see Dzeko as a like for like replacement – a tall powerful forward capable of scoring all different types of goals, and will establish a firm interest once the summer transfer window opens.
Dzeko has grown frustrated with his role at Manchester City this season, often featuring with the tag of ‘super sub’. The Bosnian has an excellent goals to games ratio at the Etihad Stadium, but has been unable to dislodge the likes of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero from the starting line up on too many occasions this term.
The 26-year-old joined Manchester City in January 2011, and hinted last week he would be open to a return to Germany, despite two successful years at the club which saw him win a Premier League winners medal last season.
Dortmund, who are currently second in the Bundesliga this term but 17 points behind leaders Bayern Munich, are also thought to be keen on Hannover duo Mame Biram Diouf – formerly of Manchester United -and Mohammed Abdellaoue. The reigning German champions are looking to rebuild in the summer with the hope of making more of a title challenge next season.
