With just 25 days until the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the British Olympic Association (BOA) has announced the 18 players selected to represent Team GB in the men’s football competition this summer.

The announcement was made today at Wembley Stadium in London, which will host the gold medal match on the 11 August.

London 2012 marks the first time that Team GB will compete in the men’s football competition since the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, where they finished third in their group. ty to get behind Team GB on home soil. I am confident that this famous vocal support will drive the young players on to produce many memorable and inspirational performances at the Olympic Games this summer.

The players selected for Team GB are:

Goalkeepers
Jack Butland (Birmingham City)
Jason Steele (Middlesbrough)

Defenders
Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea)
Steven Caulker (Tottenham Hotspur)
Craig Dawson (West Bromwich Albion)
Micah Richards (Manchester City)
Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur)
Neil Taylor (Swansea City)
James Tomkins (West Ham United)

Midfielders
Joe Allen (Swansea City)
Tom Cleverley (Manchester United)
Jack Cork (Southampton)
Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal)
Scott Sinclair (Swansea City)

Forwards
Craig Bellamy (Liverpool)

I live in Scotland and see a lot of Scotttish Football. The lack of players from Scotland is just another sign that Pearce selected on merit. I cannot think of a single Scot I’d include.

Embarassing selection really, I honestly think it might destroy some of the younger lot a starting line up of
    Butland
    Richards Caulker Tomkins Bertrand
    Cleverly Allen Giggs
    Sinclair Sturridge Bellamy

Seems ok but I could have picked better

Accepting the rules, ie it is an U23 comp with 3 overage allowed, who would you pick that’s better?

The Scotish FA refused to allow their players to take part in the Olympics and Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain it is part of the UK, so he could no more pick a player from there than he could from Germany!

Pearce was selected as team manager to win gold for GB.He’s not there to appease, pander, sell tickets or placate the sponsors. Only when the games are over can he be judged a success or failure. As for Beckham, Sod him it’s the LONDON games, he chose to play for a bunch of Northern Monkey’s when he had the choice of 13 London clubs to choose from-No self respecting Londoner would do that,so fhhhakk him, the plastic Manc

As far as Beckhan goes he should NOT be in the squad as he chose to go to America for more money and Giggs is a better player anyway.

There must be 5 players that HAD to be in that squad. As for Beckham, picking him was a must, not just his game but what he brings to a squad. How many times has Beckham run onto the pitch and the whole england team starts to play, what he brings to the squad on the pitch, in training and in the changing room is irreplacable. A mistake equal to Hoddle dropping Gazza. Now without Bale as well I would be surprised if we get out of our group. I cant wait for the olympics to be over anyway.

The FA are a standing disgrace! Boby Charlton has been overlooked and that is disgraceful. Has Bedlamy got a knighthood? No he hasn’t!
Whilst were at it, what about Hansen and Linekar, at least we wouldn’t have to listen to the smug sneering t*ssers on the TV!

Of course we all know exactly which players he had to choose from don’t we? Which ones said yes thanks Stu I’d love to play and which ones said no thanks I’m off on holiday and having a rest, no…we don’t? shut the f**k up then. If Pearce had a lot of doors shut in his face this might have been the best squad available.

Silly comment. This will be the most tested and least drug affected sporting event for decades.
