Is Domenico Berardi Good Enough To Play For Manchester City?

This week, talksport.com reported that Manchester City have joined the growing group of Serie A and Premiership clubs interested in signing Italian youngster Domenico Berardi. Berardi currently plays as a striker for Serie B side Sassuolo and has 3 goals and 3 assists in 10 league games so far this season.

But, is it Berardi’s recent good form or the tenacity and guile of his agent that has put the player’s name in the headlines? The Daily Mail have quoted Berardi’s agent, Giuseppe Galli as saying “Juventus, Roma and Manchester City seeking Berardi? These are not rumours – this is real interest… Manchester City’s scouts have often come from England.”

There could be some truth in these comments as Roberto Mancini does like to send his scouts to Italy to search for the country’s most promising young talent. However, agents often make comments like this to improve a player’s international profile, transfer fee or weekly wage.

In all honesty, I don’t think it’s likely that Roberto Mancini would go for a player who so has not yet been able to prove his quality in any top national league. Mancini is well known for buying in young talent but his signings have usually shown their quality at a higher level than the Italian Serie B. Berardi is still only 18 years old and may one day be good enough to play for one of the best teams in Europe but I think it could take time and patience – from both the player and the clubs who really want to sign him.
