the Daily Star reports that Liverpool are to set fierce competition in the pursuit for PSG defender Mamadou Sakho from AC Milan.
The 23-year-old centre-back, who handed in a transfer request with the French champions last week, is wanted by Brendan Rodgers as he looks to bolster his defensive options and the Reds reportedly submitted a failed £8m bid earlier this month,
Sakho has already stated that he wants to leave the Ligue 1 side after being told by new manager Laurent Blanc that he was not guaranteed a first team place.
According to Italian reports, the San Siro club are hoping to land the French international on a season-long deal with an option to make it permanent next summer.
However in contrast Rodgers wants to bring Sakho to Anfield on a permanent deal as the player looks to remain in contention for Didier Deschamps’ French squad for the World Cup in Brazil next summer.
Milan could now take the upper hand by offering a fee to take the defender on loan for the season to leave Liverpool looking at possible other options.
The Reds could still lose current centre-backs Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel before the end of the transfer window with Barcelona and Napoli respectively interested and that will require another centre-back arriving at Anfield before the end of the window.
