Liverpool Echo that the Reds have upped their offer to £7.6 million as they look to capture the attacking midfielder.

Negotiations have been in full swing for the last few days after an initial offer of £6 million was rejected by Milan.

Despite suggestions in Metro yesterday that Southampton were ready to hijack the deal, Liverpool remain confident of landing the Brazilian international who favours moving to Anfield over St. Mary’s.

The 20-year-old was left out of Inter’s squad for their Coppa Italia semi-final first leg against Roma as discussions over his future continue.

Brendan Rodgers hopes the exciting youngster, who can play in central midfield, out wide or in the number 10 role as a second striker, will follow Daniel Sturridge in joining the club during the January transfer window.

Coutinho spent last season on loan at Espanyol but since returning to Italy his first-team opportunities have been limited, with only 10 league appearances this term and this fact could see him departing during the next few weeks.
