Interesting news has arrived in the Football Transfer Tavern today with The Express reporting that Liverpool’s loan move for Bayern Munich’s left back Diego Contento depends on whether Arsenal can complete a transfer for his team-mate Luis Gustavo.
According to German sources, the 23-year-old utility defender could leave the Allianz Arena this summer but only if his Brazilian defensive midfield team-mate does not make a move to the Emirates Stadium as reports have suggested.
Contento has been strongly linked with a move to Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side while fellow Bundesliga sides Werder Bremen and Hertha Berlin are believed to be interested in the former German Under-20 international
But according to Bild, Bayern’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is only willing to sanction the departure of one of the two players this summer. Rummenigge said: “We will only let one player leave.”
Yesterday it was revealed in the tavern that Arsenal submitted a £17.2 million offer for Gustavo as Arsene Wenger looks to finally find a replacement for Alex Song at the Emirates Stadium and bring a new ready-made arrival to he club ahead of the new Premier League season.
If the Gunners are successful it could end any hopes the Reds have of bringing Contento to Anfield as a strong back up for Jose Enrique.
Rodgers has become concerned about the former Newcastle United players’ consistency and wants added competition at left back – something the talented German will offer.
