Liverpool fans have put their pool cues down and begun to start an excited conversation in the Football Transfer Tavern as news of a former great’s contract standoff has given them hope of an unlikely return.

The Daily Mirror report that Xabi Alonso is currently stalling on a new deal at Real Madrid, and given the tepid relationship the midfielder has with coach Jose Mourinho, the possibility of an exit from the Spanish Champions and a return to his former club is not as remote a possibility as immediatley presumed.

Club skipper Steven Gerrard lamented the exit of highly-rated Alonso and stated that if he could bring one player back to the club, the Spaniard would be it. The Liverpool fans in the tavern are heatedly discussing the departure of Alonso and it is clear to all that the club have never quite replaced the 30-year-old since he departed in 2009.

Of course Liverpool fans mouths will be watering at the prospect of a return for the Spanish International, but officials at Real Madrid have learnt from the departure of Claude Makelele and are fully aware that they cannot afford to let such a vital player go.

Would you like to see Alonso back at Anfield? Will Madrid be foolish enough to let him go? Vote in our polls below.
