Lukaku hoping to stay at West Brom
There is good news for West Bromwich Albion fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern, with Sam Cunningham of the Daily Mail stopping by to reveal the club are in talks with Chelsea to extend the loan spell of in -orm striker Romelu Lukaku.
It is understood the Belgian striker’s representatives want to sit down with Chelsea officials at the end of the January transfer window to discuss the possibility of Lukaku extending his season-long loan with the Baggies, after another two goals at the weekend.
Lukaku has been a revelation since his summer switch, and has scored a total of nine league goals this season – two more than Fernando Torres has managed at Chelsea.
And at just 19-years-old, there is only room for him to develop further, something his representatives feel would be best done at West Brom where he is allowed to play regular first team football.
Talks have not yet opened but Lukaka said: “Hopefully after the January window we will be able to start talking about that.
“At this time I’m just looking at my own career and West Brom, I don’t really care about what Chelsea are doing at the moment.”
The Belgian appears to be loving life at the Hawthorns, and went on to say how the club have helped to turn his fortunes around.
“You have to be somewhere where you are connected with the people,” he added.
“You have to be in a good environment. Where I am now is similar to when I was in Anderlecht – nice people who want you to improve, where everyone is open to you.
“That’s why I have settled very well here.
“On the pitch, I want to win. People can be nice to you, but if you don’t perform on the pitch, you can fall very quickly.
“I went from two years playing regular football in the Europa League, Champions League, then one year I didn’t play [at Chelsea].
“So I know football can change very quickly.”
As Lukaku mentioned, he started his career at Brussels-based outfit Anderlecht and after making the move to Chelsea at the start of last season, the Belgian international only appeared eight times in the Premier League with most of these coming from the substitutes bench. He has since flourished after achieving increasing starting chances in the Midlands.
