Manchester City and Chelsea fans have been left disappointed in the Football Transfer Tavern this afternoon after it was reported that one of their long-term summer targets has signed for another club.
German newspaper Bild reports that Napoli are very close to striking a deal for Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez after the 27-year-old agreed a three-year contract with the Serie A club.
Manchester City and Chelsea were keen to recruit the German international this summer but it now seems that former Blues boss Rafael Benitez, who has just taken charge of the Naples-based club, will instead be signing him instead.
Gomez was signed by Bayern for £30 million in 2009 from Stuttgart but is a victim of their raid on fellow Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund with the Bundesliga side landing young Mario Gotze and looking all set to sign star striker Robert Lewandowski.
The forward has reportedly become disillusioned with life in Bavaria this season after finding himself increasingly out of favour and he was only a second half substitute in the showpiece event at Wembley last weekend.
This possible arrival will surely spark more speculation about City instead signing Napoli striker Edinson Cavani with the Serie A side already finding a suitable replacement for the Uruguayan ahead of his move to the Etihad Stadium.
