Following the closure of the summer transfer window on Monday the Football Transfer Tavern is beginning a facelift as we welcome all the new signings to the Premier League.
One player that didn’t make the switch to England is Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala despite speculation it was on the cards and now Sky Sports reports that Manchester City failed in an attempt to land the French international prior to deadline day.
The 22-year-old centre back spent the summer being strongly rumoured with some of Europe top clubs with City, Chelsea, Barcelona and Manchester United all reportedly chasing Mangala but only the Citizens made a firm offer that was knocked back.
Porto were very reluctant to let the former Standard Liege man leave this month and they made it clear to City that the talented defender was no available for sale at any price.
Mangala now appears happy to remain with current employers and revels he is looking forward to what could be another productive campaign in Portugal’s Primeira Liga.
“Manchester City were interested a few days ago, but nothing was ever close,” he said.
“I’m a Porto player and I feel good here. I have no problem with this issue.
“I am fine here and focused on what we can do this season.”
New City boss Manuel Pellegrini instead signed Argentina international defender Martin Demichelis as he looked for cover at the back following injury to captain Vincent Kompany while Kolo Toure departed for Liverpool during the pre-season.
