After another busy week in the Football Transfer Tavern is coming to a close with punters enjoying the last beers of the weekend, news breaks from the Sunday People that Manchester City want to sign Aston Villa’s star striker Christian Benteke.
Roberto Mancini is reportedly eyeing a summer move for the powerful Belgian forward who he has targeted as the replacement for the recently departed Mario Balotelli.
After defeat to Southampton yesterday, it looks likely that City will finish the season behind rivals Manchester United in the title race and Mancini will be almost certainly be looking to strengthen during the close season with the futures of Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko in doubt at the Etihad Stadium.
Benteke has been a sensation for Villa netting 14 goals in his 27 appearances since joining Paul Lambert’s strugglers from Genk in a £7 million summer move and reports suggest that the West Midlands club will want more than double than the aforementioned figure to secure his signature.
With City scout Gary Worthington watching the 22-year-old in recent weeks, it appears that Mancini has decided that he is the man to bolster his side’s attacking options for next season.
Benteke is clearly happy at Villa Park but the lure of the Champions League football is likely to be tempting for the young Belgian.
