There are a few whispers going round the Football Transfer Tavern that Manchester City have emerged as favourites to land Barcelona wonderkid Gerard Deulofeu who has been billed as the heir to Lionel Messi.
The speculation has stemmed from a Daily Mail article that has proved very popular among punters this evening. The 18-year-old has an £8.1 million buy-out clause and he is considered to be one of the stars of the La Masia academy that has produced so much talent in the past.
City have been alerted to his possible availability by the club’s new sporting director Txiki Begiristain, who used to work for Barcelona. Premier League rivals Chelsea were believed to be leading the race to capture the talented teenager, however the Mail article states that this has changed after the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo.
He has already made his mark on Spanish football with some outstanding performances for Barcelona B but reports suggest that he is now growing impatient for regular first team football and City are lining up a bid in the near future.
However Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova is keen to keep the exciting youngster at the club and may be more inclined to see him leave the Nou Camp on a temporary basis instead.
