Manchester United eye another Ferdinand successor

mangala.jpgIt seems a while since we last discussed Manchester United here at the Football Transfer Tavern and the Daily Star have given us a brilliant opportunity to do so again with the news that the club are set to spend £20 million on a defensive target.

The publication claim that Eliaquim Mangala is on Sir Alex Ferguson’s radar and could be a top target come the summer. Whilst the manager still has total faith in his current number one duo of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand he knows the pair are not getting any younger and soon will come the time when a replacement needs to be found.

Even if the duo are saved for the top games, competing on four fronts as United always hope to do means that back up has to be there and the Porto defender is seen as someone who could provide that in the short-term and in the long-term becoming an eventual successor to Rio.

Mangala is only 22-years-old but is valued at a whopping £20 million and also has Manchester City, Tottenham and AC Milan tracking him meaning Fergie will face stiff competition to net the player. Of course a potential swap involving Anderson plus cash may well tip the balance in the club’s favour.

Fergie has his eggs in multiple baskets however and is also tracking Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay as another defensive alternative.

Can Manchester United land Mangala? How many years left at the top does Rio have in him? Rate this rumour below.
