Manchester United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern have been left intrigued with news from Marca that they are looking at FC Porto central defender Eliaquim Mangala but face competition from Spanish giants Barcelona.
New United manager David Moyes is reportedly scouring the market for a top class defender this summer and the Red Devils have already missed out on Benfica star Ezequiel Garay as the former Everton boss looks to beef up his defence.
Moyes sent scouts to watch 22-year-old centre half Mangala in Porto’s 3-0 win over Maritimo at the weekend but representatives from Barcelona were also in attendance and United will need to contend with competition from the La Liga champions.
The Camp Nou club have spent the summer searching for a long-term replacement for veteran defender Carles Puyol who is expected to retire at the end of the current campaign. PSG’s Thiago Silva led the wishlist but the Ligue 1 side were not willing to sell while pursuits for Chelsea’s Brazilian David Luiz and Liverpool’s Daniel Agger have so far proved fruitless.
Barca coach Gerardo Martino has admitted that he needs to add reinforcements in defence in what will be another packed season and could move for the Porto star who signed for the Portuguese club from Standard Liege in 2011.
Porto insist that the French Under-21 international, who has dual Belgian and French nationality, will not be sold this summer but it is thought that an offer of around £12 million could be enough to land the highly rated defender.
