Manchester United suffer setback in attempts to land youngster
There is a stunned silence here in the Football Transfer Tavern as it has been claimed via talkSPORT that both Manchester United and Manchester City could well be blown out of the water when it comes to landing one of their transfer targets.
The rivals are rumoured to be interested in 18-year-old Roma defender Marquinhos, yet so are Catalan giants Barcelona with the latter willing to place a £21 million bid for the young Brazilian’s services. Currently at the Stadio Olimpico, Marquinhos has only been at the Serie A side for a single season and has been putting in matured and assured performances at the back despite his slender years. Barcelona of course are in the hunt for defensive reinforcements given Carles Puyol’s age and have even been linked with Liverpool’s Daniel Ager in weeks gone by. Now it seems they have come up with another potential solution.
After turning out 20 times already this season, Marquinhos is firmly establishing himself as one to watch and this has not gone unnoticed by City boss Roberto Mancini who of course is familiar with Serie A and indeed Fergie’s scouts. Both had ideas that the young player could well join their clubs at some point in the future, yet now it seems serious cash will be needed to do that given the interest emerging from Tito Vilanova’s side.
