I have arrived early at the Football Transfer Tavern, as it is my turn to open up, and usually I wouldn’t see a punter for a good hour or so but today there is a queue outside.
Then I see the reason why; the Daily Mirror’s David McDonnell is promising the customers some juicy Manchester United transfer news, as long as they keep his glass full for the day.
Once I’ve opened up and prepared myself for the day ahead, I let the punters in and they all follow David over to one of our VIP booths and when an excited United fan brings over a beverage for David, he begins.
David tells us that David Moyes is readying a £30 million bid for Athletic Bilbao’s playmaker Ander Herrera after seeing their first bid of £25 million instantly rejected.
This bid, David continues, would activate the Spaniard’s release fee clause and the 24-year-old is keen on a move to Old Trafford despite Bilbao’s reluctance to sell.
Just as the group begins to disband around David, he taps his empty pint glass and says he has more information.
A fresh and full glass is immediately passed to David and he carries on.
David also believes that Manchester United are confident of bringing in Everton duo Marouane Fellaini, Leighton Baines and Roma’s Daniele De Rossi.
Sounds like a busy few days ahead for Moyes et al.
