Manchester United fans gathering around the fruit machine in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for some big business in January, but the latest reports may scupper their plans.
Italian outlet CalcioMercato state Jose Mourinho’s side face competition in the transfer market for the services of Roma defender Kostas Manolas, with Inter Milan also eyeing a move for the Greek defender.
United lost Eric Bailly to the African Cup of Nations this month and are keen to sign Manolas as a replacement for the Ivorian whilst he’s away, with the two potentially pairing together in the middle of the back-line at Old Trafford upon Bailly’s return.
However, Inter Milan are keen to bolster their own defence with the capture of Manolas but will have to wait until the summer to launch a move for the 25-year-old, as UEFA’s Financial Fair Play restrictions are having an impact.
Manolas’ long-term future in Rome is in doubt, with the Serie A giants struggling to secure him down to a new deal, but the Greek defender’s current deal runs until 2019- giving the club a strong bargaining position.
Our landlord believes United can get their man ahead of Inter if they push ahead with a move though, if they use the current transfer window to their advantage.
Will Manolas be a Manchester United player before the end of the month? Let us know in the comments below!
