Here at the Football Transfer Tavern we raised our eyebrows when the Daily Mail linked Real Madrid with a bid for Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, yet with Jose Mourinho’s latest outburst, maybe we should have expected it.
Despite De Gea coming under fire more than once during his spell at Manchester United, he still has plenty of admirers around the globe and none more so than in Spain, where Jose Mourinho and his staff have been watching the player. Mourinho feels that De Gea would be an ideal fit for Los Blancos and is willing to put together a £20 million bid for the keeper.
The decision of the Special One to drop Iker Casillas in the last game before the winter break caused a crisis in Spain that got the nation talking more than their current financial predicament and Mourinho is currently public enemy number one. With reports in the media claiming Casillas will not play again under Mourinho, the relationship between the two is clearly at breaking point, and youngster Antonio Adan who deputised for Casillas currently finds himself in the middle of the heated situation.
Mourinho is willing to wait until the summer for De Gea – should he still be at Real Madrid, and this week the Portuguese claimed he had every right to drop Casillas, stating no one is bigger than the club, and that Casillas is ‘not a monument.’ Sadly for Mourinho and his men, the majority of Spain seem to disagree and a move for De Gea with his former Atletico Madrid connections would prove massively unpopular.
