Like the finest bottle of champagne in Football Transfer Tavern’s fridge which is very unlikely ever to be opened, the chances of Lionel Messi ever playing in the Premier League remain very slim. Hopes were further dashed yesterday after his father told Sky Sports only a ‘catastrophe’ would lead to his son leaving Barcelona.

The best player in the world has always maintained that he wants to spend his entire career at the Camp Nou where he came through the famed La Masia academy and his current contract runs until 2016, but his father revealed that talks were already taking to place to secure another extension.

Jorge Messi sees no reason why Barcelona would ever let the club’s highest ever goal-scorer, at just 25, leave.

He told Cadena Cope: “Only a catastrophe would see him leave Barcelona. It’s impossible to think Leo can go and play in another team.

“He has always said he intends to end his career with this shirt.”

The Argentinan scored two goals last night to extend his tally for 2012 to a record-breaking 88 and earn his side a 2-0 victory over Cordoba in the Copa del Rey and there is not much doubt that he will be playing for Barca for many years to come.

Will we ever see Messi gracing the Premier League? Vote on our polls below.
