There has been some surprise expressed in the Football Transfer Tavern at Manchester United’s dealing or lack of dealings in the recent transfer market.
New arrivals David Moyes and Ed Woodward struggled to sign any of their main transfer targets in a frustrating summer at Old Trafford.
The most bizarre events occurred during the potential signing of Atletico Bilbao ace Ander Herrera when imposters claiming to be representing United reportedly met with the Basque club to tell them they were willing to match his £30.5 million release clause.
However United were not and quickly shelved plans to sign him following these farcical revelations with confusion rife among all in the tavern on deadline day.
Now Simon Jones from Mail Online has made an appearance in the bar to tell punters sat near the dartboard that the 24-year-old midfielder still wants to complete his transfer to Manchester despite the failure to complete the deal on Monday.
He said: “A United offer came and I can only view that as a positive reflection on what I have been doing.
“At no time, despite what anybody reported, did I undergo a medical for United nor did I sign any contract with them. As for the future, you never know what might happen.”
Herrera also distanced himself from the three lawyers who caused the confusion by turning up at La Liga offices as they tried to negotiate his buy-out release reputedly on behalf of the English side. .
He added: “I’ve no idea who the three guys who turned up at the league offices are but I can say categorically that they had nothing to do with me or my representative.”
There has been widespread disappointment among United fans in the tavern after Moyes only managed to recruit Marouane Fellaini from Everton despite reportedly chasing various other targets, including failed attempts for Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas.
